Tinio expresses solidarity with Mindanao communities affected by earthquake—urges coordinated response

ACT Teachers Representative Antonio Tinio expressed profound concern over the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao this morning, affecting teachers, students, and communities as the school year officially opened. He called for swift coordination among government agencies to address immediate needs and ensure the safety and well-being of affected populations.

“The opening of classes was supposed to be a day of hope for our learners and teachers, but for many in Mindanao, it has become a day of fear and uncertainty. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” Tinio said.

The Representative specifically urged the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) to immediately assess damage to schools and ensure that temporary learning spaces are established where needed. He also called on local government units to prioritize the deployment of rescue and relief operations, and to coordinate with national agencies for adequate resources.

“Education must continue even in times of crisis. We urge authorities to make sure that no child is left behind due to this disaster,” Tinio added.

Tinio likewise expressed solidarity with local government officials and humanitarian organizations leading the response efforts on the ground. “We commend all those who are working tirelessly to rescue and assist our kababayan. Congress stands ready to support whatever supplemental funding may be needed to address this emergency,” he concluded. ###
